What is the best and safest way to clean plate silver without causing damage to it.?
I saw on Antiques roadshow that you should soak item in washing soda in an aluminium dish. I have tried this but it did not work. Proper suggestions would be appreciated please.
"Silvo" and similar polishes which invove rubbing are all slightly abrasive, so will eventually wear through Silver Plating (particularly on the "peaks" of an embossed pattern). "Goddard's Silver Dip" dissolves the tarnish without attacking the metal beneath. The tarnish is a compound (a sulphide, I think) of silver which forms on the surface, so dissolving it with Silver Dip will remove a miniscule amount of silver each time, but it is a lot less aggressive than a polish. It avoids the uneven wear problem with embossed patterns, because its action in the peaks and valleys is equal. Be prepared for the smell of rotten eggs if you use it..
