Worker Dies After Fork Lift Truck Accident
It has been revealed that a male employee died in a work accident, after he was trapped under a forklift truck. The incident happened at a Shetland mussel farm at the weekend. As a result, celebrations at an Up-Helly-Aa festival on the northerly island of Unst, were cancelled after the man's death on Saturday morning. The company the man worked for may now face professional negligence charges. It was reported that the man, who was employed by the haulage contractor based on Yell, was unloading a delivery at Unst Shellfish, in Ordale, Baltasound, using a forklift. The police have not named the man, but it is understood that he recently moved to Unst with his young family. Emergency services were called and fire crews used an air bag to move the forklift, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. A spokeswoman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics were called to the scene at 9.20am. She said: “We were notified of a male suffering a work-related injury. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.” A spokeswoman for the Health and Safety Executive said they had been notified of the fatality. She added the HSE was in contact with Northern Constabulary to get as much information as possible on the death before deciding on launching a formal investigation. Councillor for the area Laura Baisley, said that the island's first Up-Helly-Aa celebrations of the year, which began on Friday, were called off on Saturday as a mark of respect to the man. She said: “I think the family moved to Unst fairly recently, but that does not take away how much this has been and will continue to be felt by the whole community.” A spokeswoman for Northern Constabulary said the force had begun an inquiry but the death was not being treated as suspicious and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal in Lerwick. A spokesman for Unst Shellfish declined to comment until the HSE had investigated. Electrician dies after fork lift truck horror In similar news, it has been revealed that a 70-year-old electrician has also died due to a fork lift truck accident. The man was working at Walter Campbell's joinery yard in Ballinamallard, when the incident occurred at around 2pm. It is thought that the victim was installing wires, when he fell out of the forklift safety cage and onto the ground. He suffered serious head personal injury, and died in Erne Hospital. The popular businessman was the owner of an electrical shop in Enniskillen and was well- known throughout Fermanagh. Ulster Unionist MLA Tom Elliott, who knew him, said his death is a “massive shock” to the area. “[The victim] has been on the go for a long time, everyone would know him about the county. He was a very experienced electrician all his life. I remember him doing the electrics around our house when I was a cub. He was very well liked, very respected and very popular,” he said. “[He's] death is clearly a huge tragedy and has shocked the entire community. It is absolutely devastating and our deepest thoughts are with his family at this time,” added Mr Elliott.
