The Mystic Power of Holland Park
Holland Park is one of the most up-market residential areas located in west London. It is renowned for its attractive terraces of large Victorian townhouses, with large houses regularly listed for sale at over ten million pounds sterling.
Several countries maintain embassies here. Simon Cowell, an "X Factor" and "Britain's Got Talent" judge, lives in this part of London when he is in London. This area is also known for its high-class shopping and restaurants.
The northern half of this area, adjacent to Notting Hill, is more formal with several garden areas, and the southern half is used for sport.
Holland House, originally known as Cope Castle, is now a ruin, having been destroyed by bombing during the second World War in 1940,
It contains a famous Orangery, a cricket pitch, tennis courts, Kyoto Garden (a Japanese garden), a youth hostel, one of London's best equipped children's playgrounds, and peacocks.
Today the remains of the Holland House form a backdrop for the open-air Holland Park Theatre. This open-air theatre staged its performances in the fully covered auditorium under a canopy near the ruins of Holland House. The canopy was installed in 1988 and was expanded in 2007 by the addition of a spectacular new canopy underneath which is new seating and other improved facilities.
It is the superb setting for a relaxing evening of entertainment. The Dutch Garden Lounge is a beautifully finished glass-fronted lounge that overlooks the elegant Dutch Garden. It is a perfect location to entertain and network with clients before the performance and during the interval.
It is also the perfect location for the YHA's London Holland Park youth hostel. There are other cheap hostels in London that are centrally loacted for attractions and sightseeing.
Other attractions near Holland Park include:
- One stop east of Holland Park Station on the Central Line is fashionable Notting Hill.
- Portobello Road is just around the corner with its myriad of stalls, coffee bars and stylish restaurants, as well as hip icons such as the Electric Cinema & Club.
- Classy Kensington High Street is on the southern side of this district, with Kensington Palace, Albert Memorial and the Royal Albert Hall a short distance away.
- Towards the west is Sheppard's Bush where the Westfield London Shopping Centre is located. Westfield London, opened in October 2008, is the newest and most exciting shopping complex in London.
All these attractions are within easy walking distance from this area. Holland Park's tranquil setting sometimes makes one forget that this district is in Central London, not a great distance away from the hussle and bustle of West End.
