Has anyone heard of a suicide squad in Russian/imperial army1914-17 even as nickname by other fellow regiments
A relative said " they called us the suicide squad " (at a time when he rode a motorbike and sidecar.) We think this was there nickname by fellow regiments or friends. We also know of all known regiments of that time including The death Squad.
The only one I heard of was called the battalion of death and was composed entirely of women who hated being treated differently from men. they had their hair cut short, wore mens uniforms and carried the same rifles as male soldiers. They were not intentionally suicde squads, but given the horrific slaughter taking place in ww1 its easy to see why people may have thought that! The Russian Imperial army did not employ any kind of suicide squad however in ww2 the Red Army did use penal battalions comprised of deserters to clear minefields by marching across them and usually sent troops into the battlefield with the threat of being shot if they retreated
