Do all Art History Master degree programs require a foreign language examination?
I took a foreign language in high school and haven't taken a foreign language course since. I'm majoring in Art History as an undergrad and would like to pursue my Master's degree in Art History, but now all the programs I have seen requires a foreign language examination. Is this a requirement for the degree or is it just the school?
My sister is nearly finished with her Ph.d in Art History and has had to meet a number of foreign language requirements both for the MA and then the Ph.d. I cannot recall exactly, but believe that she had to pass proficiency tests in both German and Italian (she was already basically fluent in Spanish). However, the languages that you will need to learn are semi-dependent on the time period/region of art that you study. Her focus/expertise is Renaissance art, so she has spent a significant amount of time doing research in Florence, IT.
I am not sure how much time you have left in your undergraduate studies, but you should look into a summer intensive language program. It will look good on your application and is a useful skill to have!
