Be Mesmerized at Rajasthan’s Magnificent Mehrangarh Fort
Renowned for its pristine landscapes, picturesque Pichola Lake and the towering Aravalli Hills, Udaipur is a city of palaces, temples and a little bit of magic. One of Rajasthan’s most idyllic cities where romantic settings and scenes are at every turn, Udaipur is also a historic land of national significance. As an integral and marquee spot in the Venice of the East Rajasthan, Udaipur’s most famed landmark may perhaps be the Mehrangarh Fort which not only dominates the surrounding landscape but the skyline as well.
Ideally situated in Jodhpur at an omnipresent height of 122 meters, the Mehrangarh Fort is one of India’s most monumental forts. Set in a thick walled enclosure, the fort can be entered from its seven gates, all of which were built to denote a triumphant victory by local rulers over invaders. A number of ancient palaces with large courtyards and exquisite carvings are located within its hallowed grounds while the fort itself bears battle wounds from cannon assaults on its walls during times of war.
The museum located within the Mehrangarh Fort has been dubbed one of the finest in the state as it contains paintings, period rooms, armor and costumes of the era in a charming display of the fort’s rich heritage.
The most impressive period rooms in the museum is undoubtedly the Moti Mahal or Pearl Palace which was believed to have been specially built for queens to listen to royal court proceedings. With its five alcoves and secret balconies this breathtaking masterpiece was built during the reign of Raja Sur Singh. In a classic example of a traditional Rajput Sheesh Mahal, the Hall of Mirrors is one of the most engaging period rooms of all. This is mainly due to its expansive mirror work with vibrant plaster-made religious statues being superimposed on the mirrors.
The Palace of Flowers or Phool Mahal is another grand period room that was built by Maharaja Abhaya Singh as a personal recreation room. A venue that is said to have seen the spirited performance of dancers and other artists, one of the notable features in this quarter is its golden filigreed ceiling.
Maharaja Takhat Singh’s chamber or Takhat Vilas is a curious mix of varied architectural styles with its traditional feel and glass balled ceiling. As the residence of Jodhpur's final sovereign, the room bears evidence of the start of British influence on construction and interiors with the advent of colonialism.
The Mehrangarh Fort Museum is also home to several galleries including the Elephant Howdah. The gold and silver embossed two part wooden chairs or howdahs were used as a cozy seat in ancient times when royals were transported on elephant back. The front was specially made for nobles with protective metal covering and ample leg space while the rear of the two compartment seat was meant for security personnel who rode with the monarch.
The transportation mode during Rajasthan’s golden age of Palanquins also has a gallery reserved in the museum. As a popular mode of getting to and fro during the period, they were mainly used by nobility, ladies of the court and other royals.
Housing some of the best collections of Mughal art in India, the Daulat Khana Gallery is a must-see for all art lovers. With a vast collection of fine art and applied art, this well preserved compilation is believed to have been gathered due to intense connections the rulers retained with Mughal emperors.
The turban gallery is also a treat for all, as the evolution of Rajasthan’s preferred headwear is well-documented and preserved here. With an impressive collection of turbans from diverse communities in the region at different periods, it is also one of the museum’s more whimsical exhibits.
Musical instruments of the period are found in The Folk Music Instruments Gallery of the museum while the paintings galley is home to some of the best examples of Marwar paintings in the state. The Armory is another highlight of the museum as it displays weaponry belonging to every period of Jodhpur’s illustrious history. Sword hilts made in ivory, jade, silver and rhino horn are also exhibited, as are stunning shields decorated with emeralds, rubies and pearls. The armory’s gun collection also boasts gold and silver barreled guns while the historic seven pound sword of Rao Jodha and that of Akbar the Great are also on display among many other exquisite swords.
The Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur provides top quality accommodation for holidaymakers and corporate travellers alike. Renowned for its modern amenities and elegant setting it is the one of the best Udaipur hotels in the state.
