What is the mass percent of Cu in a 105.0g sterling silver necklace?
Sterling silver is a solid solution of silver and copper. If a piece of a sterling silver necklace has a mass of 105.0 g and a volume of 10.12 mL, calculate the mass percent of copper in the piece of necklace. Assume that the volume of silver present plus the volume of copper present equals the total volume.
Mass percent of copper = (mass of copper / total mass) x 100
*The answer is 7.0%, but I'd like to know the steps.
actually the mass percentage of sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper
if you have 100 grams of silver there is:
92.5 grams of fine silver ( this is where the 925 which is often used to stamp silver originates from.).
and 7.5 grams of copper.
So I have no idea where you get the 7% from. unless the piece you have is not sterling silver?
