My son wants to make his own class ring-he's a blacksmith?
He got a sterling silver butter knife/silver and nickle and got it white hot in his forge and it wouldn't melt. After 3 hours of a continuous white heat (2500 degrees), it still wouldn't melt.
What else can he do? Any metal workers out there?
Regular silver is pretty inexpensive. Just go get some pre 1964 quarters, dimes, half dollars.
1964 on is only 90% silver so I would go just a few years earlier. You can find old beat up coins for real cheap at almost any coin shop. They usually have a box of them sitting on the counter. He probably could even use foreign coins as long as they are silver. They should have some of them too.
