The Symbol Of Jews: Symbolism Of The Star Of David
The Menorah is an ancient symbol of Judaism and has been around longer and is more wellknown than the Jews use of the Star of David. The shape of the Star of David is actually a hexagram. A hexagram is a 6 pointed geometric star figure.
Some scholars believe that its shape originated as a symbol of Judaism because it was the shape of David's shield when he fought the giant Philistine Goliath and slew him using stones and his sling. It is told that the shield was not made completely of metal, but only consisted of as few pieces as possible that could hold the strong leather stretched across its frame; hence two triangles laid over one another.
This theory is still debated, however, as other traditions claim that David's shield had a picture of the menorah engraved on it.
