If a bowl is marked "sterling," does that mean the entire bowl is sterling silver?
I just came across a silver serving dish that is marked "sterling" on the bottom. The inside of the bowl has tarnish that looks consistent with silver, but what I was wondering is if by being marked "sterling" does that mean that the entire bowl is sterling or just that the bowl contains sterling?
If the bowl appears to be all silver, then I'd say that it's probably all sterling. This can get a little complicated with jewelry, where some parts might be sterling and others silver plate, but with a plain silver bowl I think it's pretty straightforward: it sounds like a sterling bowl.
Are there any other marks on the bottom of the bowl? Often antique sterling will have "hallmarks" stamped on it, indicating the maker, the place it came from, and the year it was made. These are typically animal shapes, sometimes an anchor, and often a letter indicating the date. If the bowl has those marks, it's sterling and you might be able to learn more about it by searching "silver hallmarks" and doing some research.
Sterling silver is actually not pure silver. It's an alloy, usually being 92.5% silver and the rest usually copper. (Some sterling pieces are stamped "925" for identification.) Other percentages were common in past times and some other countries. Pure silver is just too soft to use, so it needs another metal added to make it stronger.
Anyhow, if your bowl says "sterling," I think the likelihood is that the whole thing is sterling.
Hope this helps!
