How To Care For Your Sterling Silver Or Rhodium Plated Cubic Zirconia Jewellery?
Some customers came to us wanting to know more on the care for their Sterling Silver or Rhodium Plated Cubic Zirconia Jewellery. Therefore this session, Jewel de Palace did some research to provide you with this essential information.
In our earlier Jewellery Knowledge presented to you, we have highlighted the common finishes/plating and various stones uses for jewellery. Let us reiterate.
Rhodium Plating: A member of the Platinum family. The electro-deposition of rhodium for oxidation resistance, gives a shiny white surface like platinum. They are a popular choice used for current jeweller on their jewelleries due to its bright finishes and durability.
Cubic Zirconia (CZ) is well known as a substitute for diamond, due to its hardness and great fire. CZ is also a beautiful synthetic gemstone that is durable and inexpensive and now even comes in any colors of the rainbow, making it even more desirable. Therefore in recent years, it has established itself as a gorgeous gem in its own right. CZs are a wonder diamond stimulant. They are actually quite easy to care for and don't scratch easily.
So how to keep your CZs look as brilliant as it is used to be. Here are some tips:
Avoid hand lotions, oil related and dirt
Wonder why after sometimes, your CZ does not look as bright & shiny as they used to be, and that happens to diamonds as well? That is because a layer of oil and dirt could have covered the shine. Once a CZ gets a layer of these mentioned on the bottom of the stone, the shines goes away. Therefore it is advisable to remove your CZ jewellery before applying hand lotion, sunscreen, and oil related products. With these in mind, you do not build up these layers of lotion, oil and dirt from the skin to the stones.
It is also best to remove the jewellery while exercising, because perspiration can transfer oils from your skin and make a CZ look dull. If your CZ jewellery is made of sterling silver, remove it before handling harsh chemicals or swimming to avoid damaging or discoloring the silver.
Clean and wash your CZ
We know the above is hard to practice and avoid at times. Therefore when you noticed your CZs appear dull. It is time to restore the shine by cleaning and washing them.
Question: Do cleaning methods used also depend on the material and finishes used on the jewellery? The answer is yes!
When your CZ jewellery is made of Gold or Platinum
You can clean it with Jewellery Cleaning Solution or Jewellery Dip at home. Alternatively you can approach a jewellery store near you to have them clean using an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner and likely a steam cleaner similarly to cleaning diamonds. They will come out looking as brilliant and bright as new!
When your CZ jewellery is made of Sterling Silver or Plated
The main concern is abrasives which will wear on the plated surface. You will not be able to avoid natural abrasive contact in everyday wear but you can lessen any chances of wear caused directly by cleaning. It is best to avoid the above mentioned cleaning products as harsh chemicals can wear off, discolor and damage your sterling silver and plated jewellery.
Methods of Cleaning:
1) Clean your sterling silver or plated jewellery with a soft 100% cotton (nap free) cloth or flannel cloth and gently rub off any excess dirt. Remember silver is a very soft metal and you can scratch it if you aren't careful so don't rub it too briskly. Never use anything but a clean 100% cotton or a special sterling silver cleaning cloth. The stroke of the cleaning should be using straight, back and forth strokes. Do not rub in circular motions, that can scratch the surface of your jewellery.
2) Soapy water and a soft toothbrush can be used to clean any type of CZ jewellery when the cleaning cloth fails to reach some of the corners or inaccessible area. Simply mix mild dishwashing liquid with warm water and soak the jewellery. You can then gently brush the CZ clean with a soft toothbrush and rinse it under warm water and finished with a good dry. However please note that the gentle detergent and soft brush will only work around the stone and perhaps inside the ring. As for the plated surface, just rub with your fingers will be good enough to remove any dirt. Avoid brushing on the silver surface.
3) You may also try steaming your CZ jewellery. Using a water kettle, or any other method that produces steam, hold your jewellery above the steam. Once steamed, use a soft dry 100% cotton cloth to dry them. It helps remove the grease on the stone surface, and works well for diamonds too!
Avoid using polishing cloths on Plated jewellery.
We also seen some research that it is recommended against using polishing cloths that are intended for use on uncoated silver, or gold jewellery. Reasons given is that some Silver Plated jewellery which has been cleaned so much that the plating is worn and the base metal shows through. Of course, rhodium is much more durable than sterling but excessive rubbing may still wear off. Hmmm....maybe you just have to try to find out this fact yourself gals...we are unable to confirm this, but it does make some sense, don't you think so?
Storing of your CZ jewellery
Even though CZ are difficult to be scratched because of its high hardness rating similar to diamonds, the metal and other stones in the Jewellery can be damaged if the jewellery is not stored properly. You may want to store your CZ jewelleries in a separate compartment in your jewellery box or in soft jewellery pouches. Treat them well just like your other assets, and worth investment!
We hope the above information should do well for your care of your CZ jewellery.
