How to introduce big dogs to little dog?
i have a male and female greman shepered and i am getting a male shih tzu in march ( i go to see him every week till he is 8 weeks old) because he is 3 weeks now any ways how do i interduce them to eachother
i think they will be ok it is just there so big and the puppy will be sooo small (the puppy is going to be my moms) she lives in my basemeny
my female dogs hates dogs outside the fence but once she knows them she cares for them like a baby
i thought of like takeing a towel when i go see the puppy again and rubbing it with it then bringing the towle back to my house and letting the big dogs smell it is that a good idea? just so they kinda get a heads up
I think the towel idea is a very good one.
However, the problem you should prepare for isn't so much related to their size difference, but their age difference. Many adult dogs are not tolerant of rude puppy behavior. Pups will be rude. They'll invade personal space and ignore social signals to bug off. The problem is that when an adult dog is rude, it is socially appropriate for the victim to snap at the offender, even biting their muzzle and knocking them down to get their point across. This could not only seriously injure your puppy, a mere snap can damage his confidence and socialization.
So when you introduce them, make sure to supervise. If the pup starts annoying the adults, stop him. By the time he's a year old, if you've kept him from being a pest, the three should get along fine regardless of size.
One of my German Shepherd's best friends is a Brussels Griffon. He gets along fine with Corgies, Chi's, Pugs, and pretty much any breed because he was well socialized as a pup. If the same is true of your GSDs, you really shouldn't have trouble other than possibly if the pup is a pest.
When they meet for the very first time, you hold the pup and present his butt to each of your existing dogs for examination. Let the pup sit in your lap while you love on your adult dogs. Avoid creating jealousy by giving *each* dog individual attention.
