Eating with an antique spoon?
I'm writing a story in which there's this character who's mad about antiques. He doesn't only collect them but also uses them in his everyday life. Well, at least, I plan him to do so. I wonder if he wanted to eat his soup with a Victorian silver spoon what did it take to do so? Imagine, for decades that Victorian spoon had been scrubbed with various disinfectants and the likes. What my character needs to do so that he could eat his soup with that silver spoon without risking his health?
Basically your character would polish the spoon and then wash it in soapy water. Polishing it would get rid of whatever accumulated residue was on the spoon, and washing it in the soapy water will get rid of the silver polish. Since a silver spoon isn't porous, any contaminants can only be on the surface and are therefore fairly easily removed.
