Portland Trail Blazers Team
The Portland Trail Blazers is a professional basketball team that is situated in Oregon. Commonly known as the Blazers they play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) wearing red, white, black and silver colored jerseys. This franchise has never been relocated out of city. It joined the league in 1970. It was founded by Paul Allen who is also the owner of the team since 1988. Presently the teams’ president is Larry Miller, the general manager is Kevin Pritchard and the duties of head coach are carried out by Nate McMillan. It is affiliated with Idaho Stampede.
The name of the team was selected via a contest that took place a couple of weeks after the establishment of the team. Thousands of participants took part. Pioneers was considered but then rejected and the name "Trail Blazers" was finalized. During 1977-1995 the team sold more than 814 straight home games. Originally its home games were played in the Memorial Coliseum but were later relocated to the Rose Garden Arena in 1995. It has made it to the NBA Finals thrice winning it on the first occasion in 1977 and losing on the other two in 1990 and 1992.
To date they have made 25 playoff appearances in its career that spans 36 years. Off these 25, 21 straight appearances were made starting from 1983. Some of the popular players that were included in the team were Hall of Fame players such as Wilkens, Walton, Drexler and Petrovic to name a few. Another player worth mentioning is Pippen who was considered to be amongst the top 50 players of the team ever. He has yet not made it to the hall of fame but is amongst the most successful players this franchise has ever produced. He bagged the Most Valuable Player title in 1977 and 1978. Several of the teams’ players have won the NBA Rookie of the Year titles. In addition it has been coached by two coaches who are included in the hall of fame.
It made its debut in 1970 as an expansion team in NBA. In the initial years the team was led by Petrie and Wicks who failed to steer it to a NBA postseason during the first six years of its inception. During that time period the team was coached by three different coaches, two of them being Lenny Wilkens and Stu Inman. The team was successful in winning the NBA Draft two times in that time period. In 1972 the draft was used to acquire LaRue Martin and in 1974 it was used for the acquisition of Bill Walton.
In the first quarter of 2007 Steve Patterson gave his resignation as the teams’ president and Paul Allen stepped into his shoes. The team managed a finishing record of 32–50. Player Brandon Roy bagged the 2006–07 Rookie of the Year award. Pritchard’s promotion to the post of the general manager also came that year and Larry Miller was taken on as the president for the team.
